The ICC Cricket World Cup is the international championship of One Day International (ODI) cricket. The event is organised by the sport’s governing body, the International Cricket Council (ICC), every four years, with preliminary qualification rounds leading up to a finals tournament. The tournament is one of the world’s most viewed sporting events and is considered the “flagship event of the international cricket calendar” by the ICC.

World Cup trending: Bouncers to the fore as bowlers hunt wickets:
At about 3pm on Saturday, New Zealand had made short work of Sri Lanka in 45 overs, a day after West Indies had done the same to Pakistan in 35 overs. Two games between top sides over in 80 overs. Imagine the horror if the ICC hadn’t eliminated the others. If Afghanistan hadn’t been made to qualify.
Pretty soon on – finally – a glorious summer’s afternoon in Bristol, Afghanistan were five down for 77 despite having staged a comeback. It wasn’t enough to dampen the mood in the stands where the Afghan fans were still partying and more than a few English fans were sticking it to the Aussies. As if oblivious of the run of play as the fans in the stands, Najibullah Zadran and Gulbadin Naib began to counterattack.
Boos follow Warner, but determination shines through:
David Warner is an Australia cricketer again. Four hundred and thirty-three days later, never mind that he brought along with him a couple dressed as sandpaper, and loud boos most places he has gone, Warner is an Australia cricketer again. That much no one can take away. Once he is done ignoring the boos, once he is done deflecting every last bit of attention off himself and onto the team, he must feel great relief that he is back playing for Australia.
Warner’s is quite different to the cases of Steven Smith and Cameron Bancroft, who have drawn their share of sympathy following tear-filled admissions of guilt. The cricketing world has been less forgiving on Warner, about whom the worst has been assumed. He is the perpetrator, the corruptor, the sledger who infamously said he needed to hate the opposition to be at his best. He has not made a public show of contrition, he has not had sponsors welcoming him back, he has done his time in silence. He needed this reassurance the most.
Matt Henry and Lockie Ferguson tear up Sri Lanka:
New Zealand 137 for 0 (Guptill 73*, Munro 58*) beat Sri Lanka 136 (Karunaratne 52*, Ferguson 3-22, Henry 3-29) by 10 wickets
As it happened
Yes it was a good toss to win. Yes it was a green pitch. Yes it was a beautiful morning on which to bowl. All that said, New Zealand’s demolition of Sri Lanka in Cardiff was a powerful display by a team that always seems to figure at the pointy end of World Cups, demonstrating too that the climes of an early English summer (albeit in Wales this day) will only add to the their prospects of progressing to the final four.
Russell’s spell was the turning point – Sarfaraz Ahmed:
Andre Russell’s spell broke Pakistan’s back, and that was the “turning point” of the match, according to Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed. Pakistan sank to an embarrassing defeat in their World Cup 2019 opener, shot out for 105 in 21.4 overs, with West Indies chasing down the target in just 13.4 overs.
“Pressure was built when we lost our first wicket in the fourth over,” Sarfaraz said. “His [Russell’s] spell was the turning point. He took two wickets and that put us on the back foot [immediately].”
Russell got Fakhar Zaman and Haris Sohail inside the first ten overs, in a spell that read 3-1-4-2. That sparked a collapse which Oshane Thomas completed with 4 for 27. Chris Gayle then led the way as West Indies hammered the target in about an hour’s worth of play. Sarfaraz said his players needed to erase the debacle from their minds and start afresh for the rest of the tournament.
